FRAMING CARPENTER JOB DESCRIPTION

Position: Framing Carpenter

Reports to: Project Manager/Superintendent/Foreman

POSITION SUMMARY

Framing carpenters erect walls, floors, and roofs for commercial, residential, and industrial buildings and other structures by cutting, shaping, and installing building materials based on blueprints and specifications.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Framing Carpenter is accountable for performing the duties and responsibilities described below. The list, however, is not necessarily an exhaustive description of the duties and responsibilities associated with the job.

  • Interpret Construction Plans - read blueprints, sketches, and drawings for carpentry projects of all types.
  • Prepare Building Materials – measure and accurately cut, shape, and install building materials to build frames for buildings and structures.
  • Make Repairs - repair existing structures and flooring.
  • Clean Sites - keep the job site clean and always organized by putting away tools and materials after use, sweeping up, and performing other cleaning tasks.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as needed and assigned.

REQUIREMENTS

  • 3-5 years of wood framing carpentry experience in the construction industry (preferably commercial)
  • High School diploma or GED preferred but not required
  • Knowledge of OSHA and safety regulations, OSHA 10 required, OSHA 30 preferred.
  • Preferred certifications to include fall protection, lull/class 7, boom/man lift. off road forklift, scissor lift, laser, rigging, hand signs, Hilti, or Simpson powered actuated tools.
  • Must own/maintain all required PPE and hand tools.
  • Knowledge of and experience using hand tools, power tools, and measuring tools.
  • Ability to make mathematical calculations to determine the height, width, and length of materials needed to create structurally sound building components.
  • Ability to measure/plan, read and follow blueprints with knowledge of building code
  • Critical thinking skills to analyze construction plans, spot potential structure problems and find ways to make repairs on existing structures.
  • Good communication skills to maintain job site safety and relay information while working with other construction professionals. 
  • Valid driver’s license with reliable transportation is required.
    • Employees are required to have reliable transportation to get to the job site, travel between job sites, purchase materials, etc.
    • Employees operating a company vehicle are required to have an acceptable driving record per our insurance policy/carrier requirements.
  • High motivation, work ethic, and enthusiasm.
  • Must possess excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to operate a smart device for timekeeping, communications, etc.
  • Must be of legal working age in New York State, and eligible to work in the U.S.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Must have manual dexterity, a good sense of balance, and excellent hand-eye coordination.

  • Prolonged periods walking, standing, climbing, bending, sitting, and kneeling.

  • Keep or regain the body's balance or stay upright when in an unstable position.
  • Use fingers and hands to handle, grasp, move, assemble, and control, materials, objects, tools, etc.
  • Make quick, precise adjustments to machine controls.
  • Repeat the same movements (i.e., Make fast, repeated movements of fingers, hands, and wrists).
  • See objects/controls in bright/glaring light, see details of objects, determine distance between objects.
  • Understand the speech of another person and speak clearly so listeners can understand.
  • Hear sounds and recognize the difference between them; focus on one source of sound and ignore others.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.

  • Exposure to extremely loud sounds and noise levels.
  • Encounters a variety of weather conditions including indoors and outdoors, hot, and cold temperatures, with exposure to wet surfaces when working in the rain or snow.
  • Often wears protective attire, such as hard hat, safety goggles, safety shoes, etc.
  • Often exposed to hazardous equipment, such as cranes and hazardous tools such as power saws.
  • Often exposed to high places, such as scaffolding, roofs or ladders.
  • Sometimes exposed to fumes/contaminants, such as fuel, insulation materials, paints, and solvents.
  • Sometimes exposed to cramped workspaces that require getting into awkward positions.
  • This position operates in both interior and exterior construction sites and is constantly exposed to the elements of a commercial or residential construction site. WORK SCHEDULE
Company operating hours are Monday-Friday 7am-3:30pm. Full-time employees are regularly scheduled and expected to work 40 hours per week. Part-time employees are expected to work as scheduled. Overtime as needed and approved by the manager. All employees are required to take meal breaks in accordance with New York state law.

 

TRAVEL
Our teams meet at the jobsite. Therefore, this position requires travel to a jobsite each day, typically in the greater Rochester area. Most work projects require an extended period at a single location, though occasionally jobs are postponed or delayed which may require transportation to more than one jobsite in any given day or week. There are occasional work sites outside the Greater Rochester Area; though, wherever possible, consideration is given to the location of the employee’s home and willingness to travel. Reliable transportation is required to travel between job sites, purchase materials, etc.
